I Like
In my limited spare time I enjoy most media endeavors. Obviously the internet is a perennial favourite, but films, books, computer games, music – you name it.
I’ve spent a great deal of time and money in assembling my own home theatre, which is hooked up to the Window 7 PC as well as the Xbox 360. Since I’m part ex-pat I like the option of watching the Beeb via the iPlayer – huzzah internet on TV.
A while back I finished the entire Dune-saga by Frank Herbert, which I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who fancies the genre. I’ve been struggling a bit to fill the void, but the Dresden Files from Jim Butcher is helping.
In the realm of the computer game I spend a great deal of time thinking about the narrativity in modern games. In 2008 I attended a talk by Esben Aarseth (one of the primary researches in the field) in Aarhus. I disagree with much of what he has to say on the subject of inherent narrativity, but that's a discussion for another time – suffice to say it sparked my interest enough to make me write my bachelor thesis on the subject of transferring a narrative work from one medium to another. Namely how well Casablanca would do as a computer game. The answer? Not very.
I written elsewhere on the site I am a huge fan of tech. Once I win the lottery there will be many more gizmos around the flat, you mark my words… Among my most prized doodads is my iPhone, which has changed to way I think of phones, the internet and communication. It has limitations abound, but it’s also an amazing device. Also, my Macbook is never far off.
